Absolutely superb and greatly needed
Format: Hardcover
I have read quite a few N.T. Wright books, but this one sounds a cry for something that is most needed in the church today and that is Christian character formation. When virtue is spoken in other places it is most often done so from the wrong angle, but Wright gets it right. The whole idea that after we get "saved", we have done all that is needed, besides inviting a few others to come and join us is tackled by N.T. Wright in this book. Wright explains why Christian character matters and how it relates to God's eschatalogical plan of New Creation. Wright deals with virtue and what exactly it is and how to form Christian virtue. According to Wright, we should practice things like doing right, loving, forgiving, turning the other cheek, etc, until such practice becomes second nature. Wright does not leave out the Holy Spirit in the process, but calls us back to Spiritual disciplines. There is no cheap grace or legalism in this book. Somehow Wright has stuck the right balance between the two poles of liscense and legalism. I recommend this book for all Christians.

BIBLICAL AND THEOLOGICAL NAVIGATION THROUGH PARTISAN POLITICS!
We used N. T. "Tom" Wright's book as the sourcebook for our sermon series and Sunday School lessons during the 2016 national election season in the USA. Due to the unprecedented rancor and division in our country, which always overflows into the life of the church, we needed a solid, biblically-based and theologically-sound source to discuss the body politic, and apply biblical principles to it to help our people navigate these troubled waters. It also needed to be truly non-partisan, not just pay lip-service to non-partisanship then let the true partisan colors shine through, as many authors and books seem to do. Wright's being British and many of his illustration also being so really helped make application without raising defenses or starting arguments. His high view of the authority of scripture and the willingness to be convicted and challenged by the Bible rather than attempt to use the Bible to justify political positions was indeed refreshing. Many purchased the book in our congregation, and I found it be to an excellent source to develop sermons and lessons from. We give this the highest recommendation and comment Dr. Wright on his excellent and needed help in this area of our national life.

Helpful, But Better Treated Elsewhere
N. T. Wright's God in Public is a collection of lectures spanning nearly twenty years on God, public life, politics, the Bible, and Christian witness in our time. These thoughts are relayed in Wright's signature style, which combines academic and intellectual insight, accessible illustrations, and plain speech, and definitely have the character of the spoken word given not only to address broad themes but specific events. Some essays are more occasional than others. While each essay is engaging and informative, Wright has touched on many of these themes more fully and more profoundly in other works. You won't find much new here, only different angles on much discussed subjects like postmodernism, virtue, the atonement, the significance of the life of Jesus, and the problem of evil. Wright's reminders about the meaning of the kingdom of God, his exposition of power, and the victory of Christ and on the cross (and how our view of the atonement has implications for public service and prophetic witness) are all helpful, even where they have been explored at more depth and greater clarity elsewhere. The oldest lecture in this collection was first offered in 1999, and the most recent in 2015. The political landscape, and Christian witness therein, has shifted somewhat since Wright's last lecture, not only in the United States but across the globe. In my estimation the challenges are even more daunting. I hope Wright will continue to apply his intellect to the challenges we face today, calling the church back to Scripture and to prayer for guidance and wisdom in how best to proclaim and to embody the good news of and about Christ.
