A Montessori Chowki is a simple floor table or lap desk that is sized proportionately for the child. It is used by children for a variety of activities such as, working with materials/toys reading, and writing activities. Maria Montessori observed children using Chowkis in India. She was impressed with this workspace for kids that she introduced it in Montessori classrooms.  Since then their popularity has grown and the Chowki can now be found in Montessori classrooms around the world.

These are typically used without a chair. Children and adults can sit or kneel at the chowki which neatly and effectively defines their workspace and promotes focus on the task at hand. Chowkis promote movement, offer flexibility in the classroom, and can contribute to an effective workspace where children can develop to their maximum potential. Chowki works well in small spaces as well as in large multi-use spaces, they are stable but light enough for the child to move and can be stacked for space efficiency. Chowki comes in a natural finish as in Montessori environments it is recommended that Chowkis are plain in color and design (not decorative) as to not distract the child from the work. 

Typically the child uses the Chowki sitting or kneeling on the floor (without a chair), it can help to define the child's workspace and promote concentration and focus. Chowkis can work well at school and home, they are easy to move around, this is especially useful if the child hasn't finished their work, and they can move it to the side until they can come back to it. It provides a nice flat and stable surface for things like drawing or doing puzzles, which can be useful if you have a textured or uneven carpet in the workspace.

Chowkis is also excellent for working outside! The child can move them by themselves and they can be taken almost anywhere.  Chowki table is designed to be all assembled by interlocking inserts and requires no screws or fittings. Made of Russian Baltic Birch plywood with water-based varnish.
