THE APPLE TREE
People said something terrible was under the apple tree and not to eat the apples. The apples that were small and pink were perfectly tart and lovable, but people didn’t know this. The apple tree knew and was not surprised. It knew something wonderful was down there: hands somebody had squeezed in a frightening time and a big toe. Two big toes in fact and some small ones. All ten very other from other toes you might know. An ear into which somebody had put their best words knowing it was a pricey gift and not minding. What was left.
