Prior to 2011, Notre Dame student managers would spray paint the helmets prior to each game with, legend has it, paint infused with gold flakes from the iconic campus dome. Each game used Notre Dame helmet is received with a letter from the Notre Dame-Steiner Sports Team Partnership that states its authenticity as game used.
