artist biography

Knut Birger Mörk (Magnusson) was born November 14, 1919 in Gävle. He was a Swedish painter, print maker and illustrator.

Mörk studied at Edvin Oller's Målarskola (painting school) in Stockholm, as well as a number of technical courses. He later undertook private study trips to France, Italy, and Norway.

He made his debut with a solo exhibition in Gävle in 1943 and subsequently had numerous solo exhibitions throughout his career. He had a few two and three artists shows inclduing ones with Lars Stenstad and Gunnar Allvar, another at Ronneby in 1955 and together with his wife fellow artist Greta Mörk (Olde-Holmberg) and Emil Näsman at Örebro Art Gallery. He has regularly exhibited in group exhibitions including ones curated by the Sveriges allmänna konstförening (Swedish General Art Association) and Konstfrämjandets art group. He was one of the initiators in 1962 of the formation of the Konstnärernas centralköp (Artists' Central Purchase) - a co-operative purchasing organisation for artists' materials.

Mörk is best known for his landscape and still life works with a slight abstract style, but also painted some figurative works. He painted  in oil, watercolour and enamel. As a print maker he produced woodcuts in black and white, and colour. He produced a number of public works including a polychrome wood sculpture for Hjulsta residential area in Stockholm, enamel paintings for Unilever in Stockholm and London, and the decoration with altar paintings in triptych for Famnen in Traneberg and in Riksby, Stockholm, and an altar piece at Sankt Ansgar's church.

Examples of Mörk's works are held in the public collections including the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Malmö Nuseum , Göteborgs Konstmuseum, VärmlandsMmuseum, Örebro läns Museum, Gävle Museum, Östergötlands Museum in Linköping, Borås Konstmuseum  and the Norrköpings Konstmuseum.

He passed away at the age of 90 on July 20, 2010 in Uddevalla.
