As the flagship of the German Navy and the largest warship alongside the Tirpitz, the Bismarck boasted a displacement of 50,900 tons and a crew of 2092 men. Commissioned on August 24, 1940, she set sail on May 18, 1941, for the "Rhine Exercise" operation.
Teaming up with Prinz Eugen, the Bismarck was quickly spotted by British reconnaissance planes. During the encounter with the Hood on May 24, 1941, the Bismarck successfully sank the Hood. Following an extended pursuit, the Bismarck was struck by an aircraft-fired torpedo on May 26, 1941, and subsequently engaged by the British battleships King George V and Rodney. Finally, on May 27, 1941, the Bismarck was scuttled by her own crew, 490 km off the French coast.
