The S.T. Dupont Line D Large Gradient Fountain Pen - La Mer translates the beauty and movement of the ocean into one of the most visually striking expressions within S.T. Dupont's contemporary writing instrument collection. Inspired by the ever-changing colors of the sea, La Mer features a seamless gradient that transitions through deep navy, vibrant azure, and luminous turquoise tones, capturing the shifting interplay of light and water. The result is a fountain pen that feels simultaneously modern and timeless, rooted in the natural world while showcasing the technical artistry that has defined S.T. Dupont for generations.

More than a study in color, La Mer represents the continued evolution of one of the French maison's most celebrated specialties: lacquer craftsmanship. Through a combination of traditional expertise and contemporary finishing techniques, S.T. Dupont transforms the surface of the pen into a dynamic composition that reveals new character as light moves across it.

Craftsmanship & Design

The creation of the Gradient collection required S.T. Dupont to push its renowned lacquer expertise in a new direction. At the company's workshop in Faverges, France, artisans apply multiple layers of natural lacquer to the brass body before introducing carefully controlled pearlescent color transitions that create the collection's defining visual effect. This process demands remarkable consistency and precision, as even minor variations can disrupt the seamless progression of color.

For La Mer, the resulting finish evokes the visual experience of looking across open water as sunlight interacts with varying depths and currents. Darker tones anchor the composition while brighter blues emerge gradually through the lacquer, creating an impression of depth that feels almost three-dimensional. Rather than appearing painted onto the surface, the colors seem suspended within the lacquer itself, a hallmark of the material's unique ability to create luminosity and visual richness.

Black PVD trim provides a dramatic architectural framework for the vibrant lacquer. The contrast emphasizes the depth of the gradient while reinforcing the contemporary character of the design. Signature Line D elements, including the articulated clip and the iconic "D" integrated into the cap crown, ensure that the pen remains unmistakably S.T. Dupont despite its bold modern presentation.

The Legacy of S.T. Dupont Lacquer

Collectors often associate S.T. Dupont with lacquer in much the same way that certain Japanese manufacturers are associated with urushi. While the materials and techniques differ, both traditions share a commitment to depth, refinement, and craftsmanship that cannot be replicated through conventional finishing methods.

For decades, lacquer has served as one of the defining artistic signatures of S.T. Dupont. The company developed its reputation through an unwavering dedication to surface finishing, elevating lacquer from a protective coating into a sophisticated artistic medium. Across its most celebrated writing instruments and luxury accessories, lacquer has consistently remained central to the maison's identity.

La Mer is particularly compelling because it allows the lacquer itself to become the artwork. There are no engraved motifs, overlays, or commemorative elements competing for attention. Instead, the visual narrative emerges entirely through color, depth, and the interaction of light with the finish. The effect is both contemporary and deeply connected to the company's heritage.

Writing Experience

The Large Line D platform remains one of S.T. Dupont's flagship writing instrument designs, combining substantial proportions with careful balance and ergonomics. The pen feels reassuringly solid in hand while remaining comfortable during extended writing sessions, reflecting the company's longstanding emphasis on both luxury and usability.

The fountain pen is equipped with a 14-karat gold nib engineered to provide a smooth and controlled writing experience. Responsive ink flow and refined tuning create a writing character that complements the elegance of the pen's exterior, offering dependable performance across a wide range of writing styles. The fluted grip section enhances control while maintaining visual harmony with the rest of the design.

The cap closes with S.T. Dupont's signature "cling," a distinctive sensory detail that has become one of the brand's most recognizable hallmarks. This precise closing mechanism reinforces the attention to detail found throughout the writing instrument.

Collector Significance

Unlike many contemporary luxury pens that rely upon limited edition numbering or commemorative themes, La Mer derives its appeal from craftsmanship and material execution. It demonstrates how exceptional finishing techniques can create collector interest without the need for elaborate decoration or overt rarity.

Within the Gradient collection, La Mer is often regarded as one of the most versatile and visually captivating interpretations because of its connection to a universally recognizable natural phenomenon. The ocean-inspired palette allows the pen to remain sophisticated and elegant while still delivering considerable visual impact. As with the finest lacquer work, photographs rarely capture the full depth of the finish, making personal observation an essential part of appreciating the piece.

For collectors of modern S.T. Dupont writing instruments, La Mer represents a contemporary expression of one of the maison's greatest strengths. It is a pen that celebrates craftsmanship through color, material, and light, demonstrating that artistic restraint can often be just as compelling as elaborate ornamentation.

Even a kitten has growing problems
Format: Hardcover
I loved this story 70 years ago and wanted to pass it on to my grandchildren who just got a new kitten. They are old enough to read it on their own, and they can see how even kittens can have problems, but all is well in the end .

Natural, Gentle, and Smells Great
Style: Most Popular
I picked these up to try something more natural, and I love them. They lather well, feel gentle on the skin, and leave it feeling clean without drying it out. The scents are really nice too. They feel like good quality bars.

Longevity, scent, quality 10/10
Style: Most Popular
I’ve gone through just about the whole box and I will be buying more. I bought these early November 2025 and now that it’s almost May of 2026 I’m down to my last two bars so id say they last awhile. I use them for body wash and will be using them for hand soap once I go through my stash of bar soaps from other brands. It lathers nicely, with a light scent, natural not over bearing chemical scents. I use this as body wash and hand soap. I haven’t noticed any skin irritation, just a good ole natural soap (: I love how there’s no plastic in sight other than maybe amazon packaging

Better than expected...
Style: For Him
I love going to a craft show or a place that sells a handcrafted soap. A good craftsperson can produce a high-quality soap that cleanses, moisturizes, and leaves a good scent. I gave these a shot after running out of those soaps. They did beat my expectations. I thought these would be a factory produced and chemically. While you can tell these are churned out pretty regularly in some sort of factory, the overall quality is good. Each scent is full and unique without being overpowering. They seem to be natural and not generic chemical smells. Really enjoy each of the unique scents. The bars themselves aren't that big. They come in a piece of cardboard and are very uniform. There is some texture to the soap, as well as an added bit of something to give it some grit. I like it. This isn't lava soap but there is something (about the size of fresh ground pepped) mixed throughout each bar. A drawback overall is how long they last. I would estimate less than a week for a daily user. I thought, given the denseness, they would last for a longer than they do. I'll probably use the entire box in under a month. Of note is the lack of slimy or slipperiness to the soap. I like this. Some soaps that I've used in the past leave you slimy and you can barely hang on to the bar. This rinses very well and doesn't make you feel slimy. Overall, these are a good replacement for the 'true' homemade soap. I am happy with them and would purchase them again.

Game changer!!!!
Style: For Him
Like a lot of folk who watch youtube I have been bombarded by Dr. Squatch soap ads over the last couple yrs. Couple that with my new mission of doing things as close to natural as I can, and my interest was peaked. I then did what most folks do when they want to learn more about said product, I went to the site and dropped a proverbial brick in my shorts when I looked at the price!!! I didn't want to give up on swapping the basement lab experiment that is my normal body wash for something more natural, but I also didn't want to sell one (or both) of my kids to do it. Enter crate 61. I didn't know this company from adam, they just had a "manly" variety box at a decent price with simple ingredients so why not. I'm here to tell you I'm never going back to "normal" body wash again. I have the definition of combination skin. My father's skin was greasy, my moms skin is bone dry. Therefore for the first hour after my shower I have tumble weeds rolling across my forehead, and from then on, It feels like I headbutted an oil tanker. After a couple days of using this soap I felt 1000% more balanced. It's not a miracle in a bar, but I have never felt moisturized AND clean getting out of the shower in my whole life. Those effects last hours. Eventually I get greasy again but you can't fight nature regardless (this also does't claim too) but the point is I feel great. The main ingredients in all of the bars are a combination of olive oil, coconut oil, avocado and palm oil with other variations depending on the bar. Those good oils have been proven to have an anti inflammatory effect on the skin and while I wouldn't call it a cure for acne, my skin is much clearer. I chalk it up to simple ingredients vs chemicals in modern soaps. As far as the scents, It's a mixed bag and completely subjective. Beside I have never had a shower wash of any kind stick around for more than an hr anyway so It's a moot point. I for one dig some, not others, hence the variety pack but I'll know what to order going forward. The 6 bars do come in a very nice box and while it would be a fine gift as packaged, it tends to combine the smells until they are removed for a day or so. In regards to longevity, 1 bar has so far lasted 2 weeks with only half gone. I'm an average dude but I'm bald (i use it for hair soap too with no dandruff) and basically take military showers so millage may vary. I recommend using a loofa and turn the heat down on your shower just a little. If you use the bar directly on your skin in a hot shower it's probably going to disappear quick. Honestly I'm ecstatic over this product and even recommended it to my sister who has the same dry vs greasy daily epic battle type skin as I do. The only downside so far is the eucamint bar I'm using now is not my fav and I want to move on but its holding up like a champ, go figure! UPDATE: 4/12/20 I'm still not through the entire box of soap and it still feels great to shower with. I have 2 full bars left after all this time so longevity is a plus. I have noticed that using a loofa less is more. I actually get a better scent out of the soap if I don't go crazy with it, just a few quick rubs on the loofa and I'm golden plus I bought a soap saver and keep it on the opposite end of the shower head. In all fairness I shower about 2 to 3 times a week with Neutrogena acne soap because of the aforementioned greasy skin but this soap helps keep that soap from drying everything out too much.
