Building Search Desire, Reward, and Independence in Your Scent Work Puppy

Early puppy Scent Work starts with safe exploration, confidence, curiosity, recovery, and simple opportunities for the puppy to use their nose. As those pieces develop, the next layer teaches the puppy how to hunt with more independence.

In this webinar, Judith will focus on the stage between early confidence foundations and simple search-area work. At this stage, the puppy is learning how to investigate, persist, solve simple problems, recover from normal puppy-level challenges, and come back ready to try again.

Independence remains the default. The handler supports the puppy in ways that help the puppy return to hunting rather than wait for constant direction. Support may include thoughtful setup, reward choices, movement, timing, and help when the puppy needs a reset or an easier setup.

This webinar will showcase how we can teach the puppy what early Scent Work problems ask them to do. Examples may include food, toys, targets, pairing, or early odor exposure, depending on the puppy’s stage of training. Through thoughtful placement, the puppy can learn to enter spaces, investigate more carefully, work through small access challenges, and stay engaged when the answer does not appear immediately.

These are puppy-level problems. The focus is persistence, resilience, problem-solving, early team communication, and a puppy who keeps working with confidence.

In this webinar, Judith will discuss building the earliest layer of team communication. The puppy learns that the handler may offer movement, support, or a small piece of information, then the puppy can return to hunting. The handler learns how to help without taking over the puppy’s job.

Additionally, this webinar will build many of the skills future odor work will depend on. Odor introduction should come from readiness more than age alone. Some puppies may already have simple odor exposure, pairing, or early odor work in place. Others may use this stage to get ready for dedicated introduction to odor or odor foundations courses. In either case, the puppy needs enough confidence, reward value, hunt, recovery, and independence for odor to support the training progression.

The goal is a puppy who wants to hunt, solve, recover, re-engage, and try again. These skills create a stronger path toward odor work, early search-area work, later proofing, and more formal scent work training.

Topics covered will include:

  • turning curiosity into hunt
  • building reward value and reward engagement
  • developing search desire
  • supporting independent problem-solving
  • using food, toys, targets, pairing, or early odor exposure thoughtfully
  • introducing puppy-level scent work problems
  • building persistence and resilience in the hunt
  • helping puppies work through small access challenges
  • beginning early team communication
  • helping the puppy return to hunting after support
  • designing puppy sessions around effort, confidence, and recovery
  • building a puppy who wants to stay in the task

Puppy Webinar Progression Note

These puppy webinars are designed as a developmental sequence, not a strict age-based track. Puppies mature at different rates, and readiness for the next layer should come from the puppy’s current skills, confidence, recovery, reward value, independence, and ability to stay productive in training.

Puppy Series: Part 1 - Tiny Nose, Big World Webinar: introduces the puppy to safe nose use, confidence, exploration, and recovery.

Puppy Series Part 2: From Curiosity to Hunt Webinar: takes that curiosity and develops independent hunt, reward value, persistence, resilience, and puppy-level problem-solving.

Puppy Series: Part 3 - From Hunt to Search Webinar: begins turning that hunt into early search work through simple setups, early team communication, careful handler support, and preparation for odor foundations or early odor progression.

The Best Interactive Dog Toy My Dogs Won’t Put Down!
Color: Blue
I have a Labrador and a Jack Russell and I bought this Qraxond interactive ball mainly for my Lab’s strong hunting instinct but I was absolutely blown away by how both dogs went crazy for it. This toy isn’t just fun it’s a total game changer for keeping pups entertained stimulated and out of trouble when I’m busy. The ball arrived nicely packaged with clear easy to follow instructions. It comes with a USB C charging cable for the internal motor no wall adapter included but any standard USB plug works perfectly. The bright blue color is such a smart choice it stands out everywhere so I never lose it in the yard carpet or under furniture. Operation is incredibly simple. The inner vibration module is held securely in the ball with heavy duty velcro. Inside a rubber core vibrates and makes the whole ball move and bounce unpredictably. There’s a protective plastic flap covering the charging port just press the button once for low mode again for high active mode and a third time to power off. Super intuitive for anyone to use. The build quality is solid. While it’s not designed for aggressive chewers and the seller clearly states that which I really appreciate it holds up amazingly well for normal play. My dogs love shaking it tossing it and playing tug of war with me and each other and the toy hasn’t shown any signs of weakening. The reinforced fabric loops are stitched tightly and make it easy for dogs to grab shake and carry even my Lab has a blast tugging on it and the vibration keeps him distracted from pulling too hard. The motion activated vibration works incredibly well. It’s highly sensitive so it activates as soon as your dog paws nudges or moves it then shuts off automatically when play stops to save battery. Both speed modes are a hit the low setting is gentle but engaging and the high setting gets them zooming around. The random movement triggers their natural prey drive so they can play independently for 10 to 20 minutes straight something my people focused standard poodle rarely does without human interaction. It’s fantastic mental stimulation that tires them out without me having to throw a ball a hundred times. It’s truly versatile for all dog sizes and breeds you can’t get more different than a Labrador and a Jack Russell yet both adore it. I ended up buying a second one just to stop them from fighting over it! The soft padded outer cover is gentle on teeth and gums and since the instructions note to remove the inner core before cleaning the cover is clearly machine washable making cleanup a breeze. Battery life is impressive it lasts through multiple play sessions before needing a charge and USB C charging is as convenient as charging a phone. At under $25 this toy offers incredible value way better than similar products I’ve tried that cost twice as much. If you’re tired of boring toys that get ignored or need a way to keep your dog busy and mentally stimulated while you work or relax this Qraxond interactive ball is a must have. It’s durable fun easy to use and loved by every dog I’ve seen play with it. Highly highly recommend one of the best pet purchases I’ve ever made!

My dogs love this ball
Color: Blue
This interactive dog ball has been a huge hit with my doodles — Simba, Roxy, and Ozzy! The second I turn it on, they go crazy chasing it around the house. It keeps them entertained, active, and mentally stimulated, especially on rainy days when they can’t burn energy outside. I love that it moves on its own and keeps them engaged without getting bored after 5 minutes like most toys. It’s durable enough for energetic dogs and rechargeable, which is a huge plus. Definitely worth it if you have playful pups that need extra stimulation and exercise!

The dog likes it, til her short attention span kicks in
Color: Green
This is an interesting toy. Our little doodle really likes it when it starts up. She does lose interest after about 30 seconds. I think it's the pauses in-between the 10 second Normal or Crazy Bouncing Mode. When she does play with it she is intense about it. The loopy handles are very handy. The company stands behind the product. I would buy it again.

A favorite toy in our house!
Color: Blue
This is the best interactive ball ever! It combines two of my pups' favorite toys...a soccer ball and weighted moveable ball. Perfect independent toy! We've had it for a few weeks and I've only had to charge it once. Amazing battery life.

Not great for smaller dogs
Color: Blue
Wasn't great for small dogs but well made and probably great for larger dogs.
