A strikingly colored and boldly patterned Antique Kilim Rug measuring 7' 7" x 5' 7" (231 cms x 140 cms). This rug was originally hand-woven in the Pirot District of Serbia, Circa 1920. Pirot was once the most important rug-making centre in the Balkans and, being located on the historical main highway which linked central Europe with Constantinople (Istanbul), benefitted from the shared cultural and artistic weaving traditions which spread along this well-travelled trade route since the Middle Ages. Although, it is still possible in the 21st C to find classical examples of Pirot kilims throughout Bulgaria, Serbia, Turkey and the Balkan Peninsula, it is becoming increasingly difficult to source genuine antique pieces in excellent, original condition. This magnificent Kilim is a rare example of Pirot weaving of the earl 20th C at its’ finest, and the original integrity of the weaving as well as the delightfully bold colors still as evident today as they were when originally woven nearly 100 years ago.
