What it's used for
- Intermediate and end posts for close-board and feather-edge panel fencing
- Gate posts for lightweight to medium-duty garden and field gates
- Structural uprights for hit-and-miss slatted fence cladding and horizontal board fencing
- General outdoor boundary and screening structures where posts are set into the ground
Fitting and handling
These posts are supplied pressure treated and ready to use, so no additional preservative treatment is required before installation. When setting into the ground, aim for a minimum burial depth of one third of the total post length, using a suitable concrete mix or post-fix compound to ensure stability, particularly on exposed sites. Store the posts flat and off the ground if not installing immediately, keeping them covered to avoid unnecessary moisture uptake before fitting.
FAQ
What does the round top on a fence post actually do?
The round top profile sheds rainwater away from the end grain, which is the part of the timber most vulnerable to moisture absorption. This reduces the risk of splitting and rot at the top of the post, helping to extend the overall service life of the installation.
Is a 95 x 95mm post strong enough for a gate?
For a standard garden gate up to around 1.8 metres wide and 1.8 metres tall, a 95 x 95mm post is a practical and commonly used choice. For wider, heavier gates or exposed locations, consider 100 x 100mm posts or consulting a fencing specialist.
How deep should I set a 2400mm fence post into the ground?
The general guidance is to bury at least 600mm to 750mm for a 2400mm post, which leaves approximately 1.65 to 1.8 metres above ground. Post depth may need to increase on softer ground or in exposed, windy locations to maintain stability.
