Victron VE.Direct to RS232 Interface: Reliable Data Communication for Energy Monitoring

Seamless Connectivity Between Victron Devices and RS232 Hosts

The Victron VE.Direct to RS232 Interface (part number ASS030520500) enables direct, galvanically isolated communication between Victron products with a VE.Direct port and any RS232-compatible host, such as a PC, PLC, or industrial controller. This cable is essential for system integrators, off-grid installers, and marine electricians who require stable, interference-free data transfer for monitoring and control.

Unlike generic USB-to-serial adapters, this interface provides galvanic isolation between the VE.Direct device and the host, protecting sensitive electronics from ground loops and voltage transients. This is particularly valuable in mobile and marine environments where electrical noise and potential differences can corrupt data or damage equipment.

Engineered for Industrial and Mobile Applications

The interface draws power from the VE.Direct port on one side and from the RS232 DTR and RTS pins on the other, eliminating the need for an external power supply in most setups. A wide auxiliary voltage range (5 V to 12 V DC) offers flexibility for custom installations. The moulded housing protects the internal logic-level shifter, ensuring long-term reliability in harsh conditions.

With a fixed baud rate of 19200, 8 data bits, no parity, and 1 stop bit, the interface is pre-configured for Victron’s standard communication protocol, simplifying setup. The DB9 female connector uses pins 2, 3, and 5 for TX, RX, and GND, while pins 4 (DTR) and 7 (RTS) must be driven high to power the isolated side—a detail clearly documented for straightforward integration.

Key Features

  • Galvanic isolation prevents ground loops and protects connected equipment
  • Plug-and-play with Victron VE.Direct devices—no driver installation required
  • Robust moulded enclosure withstands vibration and moisture in mobile and marine settings
  • Bus-powered design draws from VE.Direct and RS232 handshake lines, no external adapter needed
  • Standard DB9 female connector for direct connection to legacy RS232 ports

Applications

This interface is ideal for:

  • Connecting a Victron BMV battery monitor or MPPT solar charger to a PC for data logging and firmware updates
  • Integrating Victron devices into industrial control systems using RS232
  • Marine and RV installations where isolation is critical to prevent corrosion and signal errors
  • Remote monitoring setups requiring reliable serial communication over longer distances than USB allows

Why Galvanic Isolation Matters

In systems where multiple power sources and grounds exist—such as a vehicle chassis, solar array, and shore power—ground loops can introduce noise, measurement errors, and even hardware damage. The built-in isolation in this interface breaks those loops, ensuring accurate data from your Victron equipment and extending the lifespan of connected electronics.

Get Reliable Data from Your Victron System

Add the Victron VE.Direct to RS232 Interface to your toolkit today and ensure clean, protected communication between your Victron devices and RS232 hosts. Whether you're commissioning a new off-grid system or upgrading an existing installation, this cable delivers the dependable performance professionals expect.

This details what the average citizen may need to do when the local or state law enforcement won't protect your rights and what
Format: Paperback
If you are a second amendment supporter or if you are an African-American who wonders "What does all this second amendment stuff mean to me anyway?", you need to read this book. This doesn't take place in 'ancient' American history when only those on the frontiers needed to keep arms for hunting and protection or for the gentleman walking through 18th or early 19th century America, this is from America, the 1960's. This details what the average citizen may need to do when the local or state law enforcement won't protect your rights and what it is like to live, as a minority, during that type of time (and 'minority' may change as the winds of political strength changes). The movie about the same topic gives you only a taste. Enlarge your mind.

Review of Deacons for Defense
Format: Paperback
I found this book to be extremely informative about the Deacons. I was in Monroe ,LA in 1965 as a staff lawyer for the Lawyers Constitutional Defense Committee. We represented Deacons in various instances. This history filled in innumerable gaps in my knowledge of the Deacons. To the extent of my recollection the facts and analysis seemed accurate to me. This book is recommended for anyone with an interest in acquiring a full understanding of important civil rights organizations which contributed to the Movement in the '60's'

I love this book
Format: Paperback
I love this book. Some of the incidents took place in my home town of Jonesboro, LA. I knew many of the men (and women) who risked their lives to take a stand for racial equality. CORE's Jonesboro Freedom House (although it is vacant) still stands today, and its structure has not changed. This house, along with many of the pictures of individuals, are shown between pages 107 & 108 of the book. I shared this information with some of my students. They were quite surprised that our small town was a part of History!

Funny, Interesting, Informative!
Format: Paperback
I hiked the PCT in 2016 and I wish this had been available then. There are a lot of misconceptions about the desert section of the PCT (first 700ish miles) being flat, monotonous, and unpleasant. Even once you are out on the trail hiking through varied terrain, it is hard to shake off the "desert mentality" that comes from listening to those misconceptions. One of the reasons I love this book is because of how well the author paints an accurate picture of the beauty and constantly changing scenery the desert has to offer. All the information you would expect from a guide book is here, including mileage, water sources, elevation, etc. There are also a TON of photos that will make you question why you spend anytime indoors. I mean this literally. This book is worth buying for pictures of the Sierra sections alone. The damn near turn by turn navigation descriptions of each section are also a good reason for your purchase. The author is funny. I wanted to say that in a funny way but she's funny enough so if you want to chuckle, wait for the book. Her passion for the PCT seeps through her writing and it is impossible not to feel equally enthusiastic. On a multi-day (or multi-month) hike, that enthusiasm is almost as important as your next water source...except not..but ALMOST.
