De Maggio-familie maakt al bijna een eeuw wijn in Lodi en dat proef je in de balans tussen concentratie en souplesse. Deze cuvée komt van eigen wijngaarden en laat bramen, kersen en pruimen spreken, met precies genoeg ronding om direct te verleiden.

Wijngaarden en regio

De druiven komen uit de AVA Lodi in Californië, waar warme dagen en koele avonden zorgen voor rijp fruit met frisheid. Zinfandel rijpt onregelmatig, dus er wordt streng met de hand geselecteerd in de wijngaard. Het fruit komt van de eigen percelen van Maggio Family Vineyards, onderdeel van Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi.

Vinificatie en rijping

Na een traditionele vergisting volgt 10 maanden rijping op Frans eiken, wat de wijn rondeur geeft zonder het fruit te overstemmen. Hoe lang rijpt deze Zinfandel op hout? Tien maanden op Frans eiken, voor zachte tannines en een subtiele toets van vanille en koffie. Serveer bij voorkeur op 16–18 °C.

Zinfandel – Lodi
100% Zinfandel van eigen wijngaarden in Lodi; gekozen voor donker fruit, kruidigheid en een volle, sappige stijl.

Proefnotities en serveertips

Diep robijnrood. In de geur bosbes, braam, jonge kers en pruim, met tonen van laurier, kaneel, vanille en een vleug koffie. De smaak is vol en fruitig met kruidige accenten, de tannines zijn rijp en soepel, de afdronk is rond en aanhoudend. Schenk bij de borrel of barbecue, bij pulled pork, gegrilde ribeye of kruidige spareribs.

I didn't expect much but it works really well and seems to be very accurate. It's much more sensitive (to 0.1g) than the scale I was using to measure my coffee and the autostart timer works really well. Also, unlike my other scale, this one is USB-C rechargable and so far has no indication of needing a recharge after a week or so of daily use. My other scale uses CR2032 batteries and goes through a pair every three weeks, so being able to recharge instead is quite nice. It's small and I can use it to time the extraction and also use it to measure out heated water for tea, or whatever I need. This is definitely a steal for the price.

Great scale that needs some improvements to be perfect

Very accurate scale, looks good in white, timer works nicely and I do like the concept of the ratio conversion. Shown in photos with 0 measurement drift over time, even without the silicone mat. To make this the best scale in the price range, I would change: - The auto timer function. Timing currently stops if you pick up the brew to swirl; you must completely restart the process if you do happen to pick it up. I would change that to only stop on user input (pressing a button). - The ratio conversion. Why offer XX.0 precision if you can only change the ratio in whole amounts? I'd suggest offering 0.1 increments, selectable with +/- buttons instead of cycling through. - The silicone mat is not well affixed and slides around. Kind of useless as-is and I just keep it off. I would wrap the whole thing around the measurement platform, similar to how the Greater Goods scale does it, to really keep it secure. It's not perfect, but for the price, it's a 4.5/5 for me. Rounding up to 5 since a 4 is considered "bad" by today's online rating standards.
