In september 1944 is Nederland in afwachting van de bevrijding: de geallieerden komen en het Duitse leger lijkt te zijn ingestort. Meer dan honderdduizend Joodse landgenoten zijn gedeporteerd. Honderden burgers zijn door bombardementen gedood en duizenden verzetsmensen zijn opgepakt of vermoord. De terreur is nog niet ten einde.Nederland gaat nog maanden van strijd, honger en ellende tegemoet.

Een in Kamp Vught opgesloten geheim agent gaat op transport naar een Duits concentratiekamp; een Oosterbeekse puber is getuige van de bloedige Slag om Arnhem; een jongen uit Westkapelle overleeft ternauwernood drie bombardementen; een bevrijde onderduiker uit Bergen op Zoom meldt zich aan als oorlogsvrijwilliger; en een Texels meisje ziet haar eiland in een slagveld veranderen.
