The 17-pdr was the most formidable anti-tank gun deployed by the western Allies, and was capable of penetrating more than 200mm of armour at short range using armour-piercing discarding sabot (APDS) shot. Designed almost entirely for anti-tank work, the 17-pdr would receive HE shells that were somewhat less potent than their size might suggest - this is reflected in its special rules in Bolt Action.
