De achtergrond van Honger zijn Knut Hamsuns eigen pogingen om in Kristiania te overleven in de winters van 1880-81 en 1885-86. Met de publicatie in 1890 van deze krachtige roman schreef hij literatuurgeschiedenis. Het boek is een klassieker die tot op de dag van vandaag zijn fascinatie heeft behouden.
