Vogel schrikt enorm van het mismaakte kind; hij wordt er zelfs onpasselijk van en verafschuwt zichzelf hierom. Om het beeld van zijn netvlies te laten verdwijnen en de gedachten uit zijn hoofd te verbannen zoekt hij troost bij een oude vriend: de whisky. De dagen na de geboorte worstelt hij met de beslissing die hij moet maken. Hij wordt onder druk gezet en doet er alles aan om onder zijn verantwoordelijkheid uit te komen. Met een ongelofelijke, poëtische kracht beschrijft Kenzaburo Oë de aarzeling, de vreugde en de depressie van Vogel. Het eigen lot is een oprechte en confronterende vertelling over een moeilijke beslissing die recht uit het leven gegrepen is.
