De vlag van Zuid-Soedan is kleurrijk en symbolisch, met horizontale banen in zwart, rood en groen gescheiden door smalle witte strepen. Het ontwerp weerspiegelt zowel de strijd voor onafhankelijkheid als de hoop op een vreedzame toekomst voor de jonge natie.

Symboliek en achtergrond

De vlag werd officieel aangenomen in 2005, na het vredesakkoord met Soedan, en werd de nationale vlag bij de onafhankelijkheid op 9 juli 2011. Zwart staat voor het Zuid-Soedanese volk, rood voor het bloed dat werd vergoten in de strijd voor vrijheid, en groen voor de landbouw en natuurlijke rijkdommen. De witte strepen symboliseren vrede, terwijl de blauwe driehoek het water van de Nijl vertegenwoordigt. De gele ster, de “Ster van Bethlehem”, staat voor eenheid onder het volk.
