Carpinus cordata is een bladverliezende Chinese haagbeuk die een hoogte tot circa 15 meter kan bereiken. Het heeft een dichte en gewelfde kroon. De bruingrijze schros zit vol scheuren. De stammen en takken hebben de neiging om aan elkaar te groeien. De bladknoppen zijn slank toegespitst en zitten dicht tegen de takken aangedrukt. De verspreid staande bladeren zijn breed, hartvormig met dubbelgezaagde randen. De mannelijke katjes komen uit de knoppen te voorschijn meestal onderaan het schot van het voorafgaande jaar. De vrouwelijke bloempjes die onderaan de kortloot groeien hebben een rode stamper. Zij komen uit de knoppen die ook bladeren bevatten. De vruchten zijn hartvormige nootjes, verbonden met een groot driedelig dekblad dat als vliegapparaat dient. Carpinus cordata groeit zowel op zware, vochtige leemgronden als ook op droge kalrijke bodem.
