A Victorian Scientist’s Travel Through Time

WELLS, H. G. The Time Machine. London: William Heinemann. 1895.

8vo. Original tan cloth, maroon lettering to front cover and spine, brown winged sphinx vignette to upper board, brown publisher’s device to lower board, uncut; pp. [viii], 151, [33 (advertisements)]; spine lightly sunned, a few spots to upper edge; minimal offsetting to pastedowns; else near fine.

First UK edition, published in the same month as the first, of H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine, a foundational work of both the science-fiction genre and the modern time-travel narrative.

Introducing the term ‘time machine’ in print for the first time, Wells’s post-apocalyptic novella – recounting the journey of a Victorian scientist 800,000 years into the future – captivated readers on the cusp of a new technological age. Even before its serialisation by The New Review had concluded in May 1895, Wells had been hailed as ‘a man of genius’, and the book heralded the beginning of a fifty-year career as one of the most influential cultural and political controversialists of his time.

The work offers a sardonic rejection of Victorian ideals of progress and improvement, and a pointed satirical commentary on the Decadent culture of the 1890s, reflecting Wells’s criticism of the social consequences of industrialisation. As George Orwell later wrote: ‘I doubt whether anyone who was writing books between 1900 and 1920 […] influenced the young so much. The minds of all of us […] would be perceptibly different if Wells had never existed.’

Henry Holt and Company in New York published the first book edition on 7 May 1895; Heinemann published this British edition on 29 May. The binding device of the winged sphinx, chosen by Wells himself, alludes both to its traditional symbolism of mystery and to its role in the narrative as the monument beneath which the Morlocks conceal the Time Machine.

See Luckhurst, Introduction to The Time Machine (2016); Orwell, “Wells, Hitler and the World State” (1941).

Heaven sent
Size: Jumbo (25-Inch), Color: Dark Grey
My back suddenly decided to show me who's the boss. This reading pillow has been a God send! It is substantial without being too hard, soft enough to be comfortable without being too soft, absolutely no lumps! The outside cover is removable to allow for machine washing and is so soft to the touch. There is a handle on the back that makes it easy to move. This has allowed me to be able to sit upright, much appreciated!

Huge, super soft, cozy pillow!
Size: Jumbo (25-Inch), Color: Sage
This pillow is awesome! As a plus size person who can't sleep laying flat, the size and support level is perfect. This pillow is huge! The quality is very high, the stitching is precise, and the sage green material is soft and cozy. Great value for the price! I highly recommend this reading pillow!

MUST BUY Item for Breastfeeding Moms
Size: Standard (18-Inch), Color: Dark Grey
MUST GET item for breastfeeding moms. It is a soft pillow with a removable washable cover. The material is like a suede, which can make it hot to lean on if you typically feel hot when breastfeeding or sleeping. It allows you to sit up straight while in bed with great support.

It's perfect support.
Size: Extra Back Support (21-Inch), Color: Dark Grey
The best way to describe the super comfy reading pillow is super comfy. I use it to sit up while watching something soothing to my mind on tv and due to its comfyness and softness, it's perfectly just right for my back. The funny thing is within a few minutes I'm knocked out sleep, which is a good thing. It's soft but firm lumbar area and arms feels oh so comfortable. It gives the best sleep quality and less toss and turning. I highly recommend.

Great Size and Comfort
Size: Extra Back Support (21-Inch), Color: Dark Grey
2 months after buying a different reading pillow I felt it was time to buy a different one based on the comfort and support. I found this one listed for a good price. After carefully looking through the listing, I bought the 21" size. On my first night of usage, I was already impressed with the comfort and support vs the reading pillow I had bought 2 months prior. I like how this one has nice support for my neck and head as I'm relaxing on my bed with my laptop and phone. The texture of the filling gives it a very nice combination of cushioning and firmness. The horizontal feature line in the center of the pillow is a nice feature for back and neck support thanks to it giving the pillow some flexibility. As for the arms, their length, width, height, and cushioning are very good for resting my arm while I'm using the wireless mouse with my laptop.
