Following on from events in the previous season, Ragnar's sons Ubbe, Ivar and Hvitserk (Jordan Patrick Smith, Alex Hogh and Marco Ilso) collaboratively reign over their new land in East Anglia. Bjorn and Halfdan (Alexander Ludwig and Jasper Paakkonen) have sailed away to the Mediterranean Sea, Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard) embarks on a journey into uncharted territory and King Harald (Peter Franzen) returns to Kattegat. In this season, Floki discovers a new land and sets off to explore it, an all-out battle ensues when Vikings emerge from sewers in York in the midst of Saxon celebrations and Astrid (Josefin Asplund) tries to seduce Harald to persuade him to form an alliance.

Komunyakaa, who won the Pulitzer Prize for his Neon Vernacular, here writes about his childhood in a Louisiana town. The poems are poignant but unsentimental: the child's world has a certain kind of innocence but is saturated with violence, from the Klan to his father's abuse of his mother to the pragmatic violence of slaughtering a hog. One of the more exciting elements of this book is Komunyakaa's skill in combining realistic description with startling and even puzzlingly abstract language.
