Based in New York City, Vince Giordano and The Nighthawks have been delighting audiences for 50 years with thrilling hot jazz and dance music of the 1920s and '30s. Through regular performances, recordings, and appearances on radio, TV, and film (including Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion, HBO's Boardwalk Empire, and Martin Scorcese's The Aviator), they have gained a worldwide following and are the subject of the acclaimed 2016 feature-length documentary: There's a Future in the Past. Recorded in 2022 in brilliant hi-fi stereo sound by legendary engineer Stewart Lerman, this hefty 180-gram red vinyl pressing captures the band at its peak with stunning warmth and clarity in sound that packs real "punch." For this record, the Nighthawks are: Andy Stein (violin); Joe Boga, Jon-Erik Kellso (trumpet); Jim Fryer (trombone); Will Anderson, Dan Levinson (alto saxophone, clarinet); Mark Lopeman (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Peter Yarin (piano); Arnt Arntzen (banjo, guitar); Vince Giordano (tuba, vocals, leader); and Paul Wells (drums). The performances were recorded especially for this release and are not available anywhere else.

Note: This is a stereo, microgroove, 12-inch vinyl record meant to be played at 78 RPM. It is compatible with all modern turntables (post-1950s) fitted with a stereo cartridge and capable of spinning at 78 RPM. For best results, we strongly recommend a cartridge capable of tracking at 3-4 grams. Rugged cartridges designed for DJ use (like the Stanton 500, Shure M44-7, or Ortofon VNL) work better than delicate, high-end "audiophile" cartridges. Use an ordinary LP stylus; no special stylus is required. This record should NOT be played on vintage "wind-up" machines with steel needles. For your convenience, a complimentary MP3 download of this record will be provided upon checkout.

Guided tour through a difficult work
Format: Paperback
For the non-expert reader of Plato, this is a very good text for working through Timaeus. Actually, it may be useful to expert readers as well, but I wouldn't know about that, being firmly situated in the non-expert camp. Though some scholars may take exception to certain parts of Cornford's translation and interpretation, for those of us trying to get through it for the first time and on our own, this is still an exceptional guide. By the way, for an alternative translation and interpretation, the reader may want to check out Kalkavage's translation (Focus Philosophical Library), it is very good (I would rate it 5 stars also) and has some extremely helpful appendices for understanding references to music, astronomy, and geometry.

Cornford's Plato Cosmology/Timaeus
Format: Paperback
This is an excellent and invaluable reference book for Plato's Timaeus. If you are reading Timaeus you MUST have this book. It contains line-by-line commentary, and also, most valuable, some very helpful illustrations (example: illustration of the human body as Timaeus explained it). I would, however, balance this book with other books that attempt to place Timaeus within the rest of Plato's works. I recommend, for example, Peter Kalkavage's Timaeus. There, he attempts to link Timaeus and Republic.
