Origin/Distribution: New Brunswick to Minnesota and the Dakotas, south to the northernmost parts of Florida and Oklahoma. This plant is native to Maine.

Habitat: moist woods and thickets

More: This is a delicate, early blooming and slightly spreading little woodlander. I think it would look great growing amongst Carex rosea or Carex appalachia, and maybe even Luzula acuminiata. Has been used medicinally. The leaves can be eaten as a cooked green, although one would need quite a large patch to make this feasible.
