Discover 'Counting' by Deborah Stone, a transformative exploration of how we perceive and utilize numbers in today's complex society. This brand new book, published in 2021 by W W Norton & Company, delves deep into the artistic nature of counting, revealing that numbers are more than mere arithmetic—they encapsulate human creativity and judgment. With 320 pages of insightful analysis, Stone challenges conventional notions formed in our formative years, highlighting how counting reflects power dynamics in a post-Trumpian world marked by social upheaval and a pandemic. By addressing historical injustices, such as the original Constitutional counting of slaves and modern biases in algorithmic data, 'Counting' serves as a vital tool for understanding the implications of our numerical literacy. In our current climate, this book is essential for anyone looking to decode the complicated relationship between numbers, politics, and personal understanding. Whether you’re a student of political science, a data enthusiast, or simply curious about the role of numbers in society, this work will enrich your perspective. Don’t miss out on this essential read that promises to reshape your understanding of what it means to count and to be counted. Note: Shipping for this item is free. Description:
In a post-Trumpian world where COVID rates soar and Americans wage near?civil war about election results, Deborah Stone's Counting promises to transform how we think about numbers. Contrary to what you learned in kindergarten, counting is more art than arithmetic. In fact, numbers are just as much creatures of the human imagination as poetry and painting; the simplest tally starts with judgments about what counts. In a nation whose Constitution originally counted a slave as three-fifths of a person and where algorithms disproportionately consign Black Americans to prison, it is now more important than ever to understand how numbers can be both weapons of the powerful and tools of resistance. With her ?signature brilliance? (Robert Kuttner), eminent political scientist Deborah Stone delivers a ?mild-altering? work (Jacob Hacker) that shows ?how being in thrall to numbers is misguided and dangerous? (New York Times Book Review).

A Harrowing Account of Addiction, Recovery, and Relapse
Format: Hardcover
Greg Pizzoli’s The Watermelon Seed offers a deceptively simple yet profound exploration of addiction, recovery, and relapse. Through the crocodile’s obsessive love for watermelon, his panic upon swallowing a seed mirrors the fear and anxiety of losing control. The cycle of indulgence, dread, and inevitable return to the source of both pleasure and distress reflects the cyclical nature of addiction. Pizzoli’s playful illustrations mask a darker undercurrent: the crocodile knows watermelon may harm him — yet he cannot resist. A chillingly accurate portrait of the addictive mind, wrapped in the guise of a children’s story.

Cute but
Format: Hardcover
Caution that some children may be alarmed by the crocodile swallowing the watermelon seed. Know your audience. Otherwise a very cute, silly story that is great for a summer read or watermelon theme lesson.
