The Yumboes (also called Bakhna Rakhna, “good people”) are spirit-beings in Wolof tradition, often described as the spirits of the dead. Small in stature, sometimes said to stand around two feet tall, they are imagined with a pearly complexion and silver hair, luminous presences tied to the Les Mamelles (the “Paps”) hills on Senegal’s Cape Verde Peninsula.

In folktales, the Yumboes keep their own nightly routines: setting out in fishing boats for corn and fish, and taking burning wood from human campfires. Known for hospitality, they are described as generous and friendly, sometimes attaching themselves to human families and even sharing in mourning when someone dies.

They are also remembered for moonlit feasts; singing, drumming, and dancing beneath the Paps Hills, gatherings that briefly bridge the human and spirit worlds.
