Mesquite Bowl Blank M-1082 3.2" x 6.5" x 8" 4.8 lbs. This is a very nice half-log bowl blank of Texas Honey Mesquite. The overall color is also the deep reddish brown of mesquite heartwood surrounded by a thin band of yellow sapwood, with a complete and well-attached dark brown bark on the backside. This half-log bowl blank should be suitable for a bowl 6" to 6.5" in diameter and ~3" deep. And with the bark on the backside, you would also have the option of turning either a conventional bowl or a "barky" natural-edge bowl. However, if you want a full bark edge on the "natural" rim, you will need to secure the bark with CA glue before, and possibly during turning. This is a classic half-log blank, split through the center of the log. The pith lies at the cut face and has one long but shallow crack associated with it. I recommend reinforcing and filling the cracks with CA glue or filling with some attractive epoxy/color/mineral mix. This is a GREEN to partially air-dried bowl blank, meaning that it still retains a lot of its original moisture from when it was a living tree. It has been well-sealed with Anchor Seal and is in the process of slowly drying; this process can take years if leave it in log form. It was measured at 35 to 40% MC in March, 2022. If you need a current moisture content, please message us and we'll check its status for you. About the Tree This Texas-grown Honey Mesquite tree was harvested in El Campo, Texas in March of 2022. It was cut down by the city for reasons unknown to us, and we were happy to help save the tree from a burn pile. It is possible that this tree was damaged by the Valentines Day Freeze that Texas suffered in Feburary 2021, which is when our state lost a lot of beautiful trees in an unusally deep and long freeze. You can feel good about this American-grown hardwood being responsibly harvested and turned into beautiful art by YOU. The tree was in healthy growing condition, with a minimum of bug damage and a nice healthy girth to the trunk. There is some minor evidence of fire damage, perhaps from a campfire, near the base of the tree on one side. It may have been in a fairly protected area such as a city park, as the mesquite is less twisted and gnarly than trees grown in open pastures. The grain looks generally long and straight and of excellent quality for green or dried turning. |

Great book on a great trail
Format: Paperback
A wonderful book with great pictures and rich details on the trail experience. Highly recommended. For me, it brought back rich memories of a family-group hike 38 years ago: my mother at 78, myself at 44, my brother at 40, a young adult friend in her thirties, three teen-age boys (two during one section, a different one during the rest). and three daughters (14, 10, and 8). It was a great experience for us all. Get the book as a valuable enticement and guide, and go for it!

Fantastic Trail Guide
Format: Paperback
From the very beginning of this book, you can tell where Tami’s heart is. She genuinely loves this trail and being in the outdoors. It is written in a way to be easy to read, but filled with priceless facts and experience. I am very grateful to have this jewel at my fingertips to plan my hike of the Wonderland Trail about a year and a half from now.

very useful details, and some humor
If you're going to hike the WL this is the book to get. Lots of very, very useful details, and some humor. She really understands trail hiking. Hint: to save weight download it to a Kindle. (I'm not really an Amazon employee!). Then, read the information about the section you will be hiking next in the evening before or first thing while you're eating your oatmeal. ps: The WL trail is challenging but incredibly worth it. Get the book but more important, hike the trail.

A heartfelt, inspiring travelogue and meditation on living well

Gordon Bernhardt's Buen Camino is a great accomplishment and a thoroughly enjoyable and thought-provoking read. Gordon opens his generous heart and extraordinary life to his readers and takes us with him, winding through a fascinating, historically informed and personally reflective commentary on the places and people of this ancient journey, his own life, memories, fears, triumphs, his personal commitment to service and growth in his life's work, and his connections with a remarkable community of fellow travelers on the road. The many photographs and questions for personal reflection at the end of each chapter were very effective. I was left with a desire to someday walk this path myself, and with a great appreciation and admiration for Gordon's persistence and positivity, both in making this journey and in his life and work.
