About the Artist: International artist Gwen Cates lives and paints in Charlottesville, Virginia, following two decades in Santa Ynez, California. Active since the 1960s, she has exhibited in Britain, Italy, the Caribbean, and throughout the United States. A self-described contemporary colorist, Cates creates experimental abstract works in acrylic, often incorporating collage elements inspired by landscapes, figures, and intuitive exploration. Her imagery—winged figures, horses, animals, and symbolic forms—intertwines with fabric, lace, gold leaf, and natural materials, reflecting her ongoing interest in myth, dreams, and transformation. Her work has been widely shown, including her 2019 solo exhibition Cosmic Adventures in Los Angeles.
