The first full translation into English of Filchner's Zum Sechsten Erdteil: this edition 'contains an historical background, a biographical sketch of Filchner, summary narrratives of Filchner's expeditions to Spitsbergen and Tibet, a list of Filchner's published works, and translations of various documents that expose the profound interpersonal conflict that developed between Filchner and Vahsel (including portions of Filchner's revealing and posthumously published "Feststellung", letters written by Erich Przybyllok, and Capt. Alfred Kling's report). To the Sixth Continent is an essential component of the English-language literature of Antarctic exploration' (Rosove).
