Humperdinck's masterpiece, Hansel and Gretel, has been a worldwide success. That the composer was able to invent a musical language so apt for illustrating the fairy tale is literally miraculous when one considers that in the years of its creation (1890-1893), it was almost impossible for an opera composer to succeed without being ready to write in the style of Richard Wagner. Mythology was the order of the day, and ignoring it to depict a simple folk tale required guts. Humperdinck wrote simple, charming melodies and wove them perfectly into the fabric of the work.
Karajan's version, recorded in 1953, has become legendary, not for its technical superiority in sound technique, but undoubtedly thanks to the freshness of his conducting and especially to the incomparable duo of Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Elizabeth Grümmer. Significant work has been done on the remastering to ensure the best possible listening experience. The voices emerge very naturally, and the orchestra regains all its original dynamism.
