More and more falconers are training and hunting with small raptors due to the abundance of small birds such as Starlings and House Sparrows. Species range in size from tercel Kestrels, Merlins and Aplomado Falcons to Sharpshinned and Coopers Hawks. Our ‘micro-size’ kangaroo leather Dutch hoods are the answer when flying small raptors due to the light weight of kangaroo leather. They are made just like a larger Dutch hood using double stitched eye seams and neck as well as very thin light weight Gortex cloth braces. Each has a small leather tab on top for easy handling.
With small raptors, the weight of the hood is very important to their tolerance of wearing a hood. Our smallest size for a tercel Kestrel weighs just 4.6g and largest one for a female Aplomado Falcon or female Coopers Hawk to just 6.9g. The Tait style blocks used ensures more eye space and great fit.
Before each hood is shipped, we go the extra mile by hand molding the beak opening using warm water and a touch of leather grease. This final adjustment almost guarantees perfect fit right out of the box!
You can order and pay for two or more hoods and choose the one that fits the best and then return the others in perfect condition for a full refund. If ordering just one hood for your bird, keep in mind that you can effectively change the size of the hood up or down a size simply by further molding the beak opening by wetting it and using your fingers to change the opening.
