Join, or Die is one of the most iconic political cartoons in American history, first published by Benjamin Franklin in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. This powerful image, a woodcut of a snake divided into eight segments representing the American colonies, was the earliest known call for colonial unity made by a British colonist in America.
Each segment of the severed snake was labeled with the initials of a colony or region, symbolizing the fragility of disunity. Accompanied by Franklin's editorial on the fragmented state of the colonies, it sent a clear message: the colonies must unite for their survival. This illustration not only became a rallying cry during the French and Indian War but also played a pivotal role in the movement toward independence.
