Trumpeter 62009 1/200 USS Oscar Austin DDG-79 Destroyer Assembly Model KitThe ship is named after Corporal Oscar P. Austin, a U.S. Marine Corps officer who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery in the Vietnam War.
The ship first deployed in late 2002 and participated in the initial strikes of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
In September 2005, she again participated in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, returning to her home port in March 2006.
The Oscar Austin is a highly versatile Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer equipped with the advanced Aegis system and capable of a variety of operations, including air defense, anti-submarine, anti-ship, and land attack. It is also the first Flight IIA ship with improved helicopter operation capabilities, and as a result, the hull length has been extended by 1.4 meters compared to previous ships, and the displacement has been increased by 900 tons, making the ship larger.
Six VLS (Vertical Launch System) cells were added, and a hangar and transport rails capable of operating two SH-60 Seahawks, which were not available on Flights I and II, were added.
The additional structure has been installed at a higher position on the rear of the aircraft to prevent interference with radar waves.
This ship, along with Roosevelt, is one of the Flight IIA ships equipped with a 5-inch 54-caliber Mk.45 mod.2 gun on the foredeck.
Flight IIA ships, including the Oscar Austin, are type ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's Atago-class and Maya-class destroyers.
