Discover the powerful storytelling of Flowers in a Thorn Tree by Steven Thackston, an evocative exploration of wildlife conservation in Northern Kenya. This book is an essential read for animal lovers, conservation enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the challenges facing endangered species. Thackston's compelling narrative immerses readers in the experiences of the Northern Rangelands Trust rangers, known as the Warriors for Peace and Wildlife, as they embark on a vital mission to protect wildlife and foster sustainable relationships with pastoral communities.

Over three years, the author embedded himself with these brave rangers, living alongside them and sharing their struggles against poaching while building trust within local communities. Flowers in a Thorn Tree vividly captures the beauty of Northern Kenya’s landscapes along with the dedication of those who protect its precious wildlife. These rangers not only patrol conservancies but also act as peacekeepers, proving that happy communities are less likely to resort to poaching.

Through striking photographs and heartfelt anecdotes, Thackston highlights the stories behind rescue animals, including elephants and rhinos. His book seamlessly combines a documentary-style approach with an organic storytelling style, encouraging readers to engage with impactful conservation efforts. Whether you're passionate about wildlife conservation or looking to understand the interconnectedness of nature and community, Flowers in a Thorn Tree offers an enlightening perspective that resonates long after the last page is turned.

This copy is an excellent modernization of Malory's text with helpful footnotes and endnotes
Format: Paperback
I got this book for class, so I've only read large segements of it. This copy is an excellent modernization of Malory's text with helpful footnotes and endnotes. The footnotes were always available to explain unfamiliar words without interrupting the flow of the story.

Delightful text, but the omissions are frustrating
Format: Paperback
The modern spellings of the original Middle English text make this book quite easy and fun to read. However if you're trying to follow the actual complete storyline or compare it side-by-side with one of the original full text versions the frequent omissions quickly become quite evident and frustrating as you realize just how abridged this version actually is. That being said, the foot-of-page glossary and explanatory notes are quite helpful and informative. If only they wouldn't have left so much of the text out this would be a five-star review.

Simple and easy to read
Format: Paperback
If you are looking to just understand Le Morte, this is a good book. It's written in modern English, due to the fact the author decided he wanted it to mirror the Winchester manuscript as closely as possible, that is, he wanted it to be written in the most easily accessible language of the time. Therefore, the Oxford edition of Le Morte is less bogged down in old spellings and archaic language as other versions of the text.
