The surface of this rustic carpenter's workbench has tool holes built into the thick wood slab top, tool marks and indentations from the many projects completed over decades of use, and a great patina. It features 2 original steel vises, a large storage drawer (added at a later date), a recessed tray for holding a craftsman's tools and implements, and traditional tenon and mortise construction. Workbenches like this were common in country homes in France. Farmers were not able to work in the fields during the cold winter months so they would often make furniture for their own homes or families.
