Installation Guide

  1. Prepare the Lower Unit: Safely secure the engine and place a container under the lower unit to catch old gear lube. Remove the drain and vent plugs to empty the fluid completely.
  2. Remove the Lower Unit: Disconnect the shift linkage (if applicable) and remove the bolts securing the lower unit to the engine's midsection. Carefully lower it away from the engine.
  3. Disassemble the Gearcase: Following your specific service manual, remove the propeller, bearing carrier, driveshaft, and prop shaft assemblies to access the old seals.
  4. Remove Old Seals: Carefully pry out the old oil seals, O-rings, and gaskets. Take care not to scratch or damage the metal sealing surfaces.
  5. Clean Components: Thoroughly clean all parts and sealing surfaces with a suitable solvent, removing any old sealant, corrosion, or debris.
  6. Install New Seals: Lightly coat the new seals and O-rings with marine grease. Use an appropriate seal driver or socket to press the new seals into place evenly and without damage.
  7. Reassemble Components: Reinstall the driveshaft, prop shaft, and bearing carrier assemblies according to the manual, ensuring all components are properly seated.
  8. Reattach Lower Unit: Guide the lower unit back into position, ensuring the driveshaft splines and water tube align. Re-engage the shift linkage and tighten the mounting bolts to the specified torque.
  9. Refill Gear Lube: Fill the gearcase with new marine gear lubricant through the bottom drain hole until it flows out of the upper vent hole. Reinstall and tighten both plugs with new gaskets.
  10. Final Check: Rotate the prop shaft to ensure smooth operation and check for any immediate signs of leaks.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

How do I confirm this fits my engine?
This kit is designed for specific Johnson/Evinrude 2-stroke models and years (25, 40, 48, and 50 HP). Please check the "Compatible Engine Models" table and cross-reference your engine's model and year. Verifying your engine's original part number against the "Part Number Cross-Reference" table is the most reliable method.

What are common signs that my lower unit seals are failing?
The most common indicator is "milky" or creamy-looking gear lube, which signifies water contamination. You may also notice gear oil leaking from the propeller shaft area or around the drain plugs. Grinding noises or difficulty shifting can also be symptoms of internal damage caused by failed seals.

How often should I replace the lower unit seals?
There is no fixed replacement interval. Seals should be inspected annually when you change your gear lube. We recommend replacing the full seal kit as a preventative measure every few years, or immediately if you notice any signs of leaks or water intrusion.

OEM vs. Aftermarket?
This listing is an aftermarket replacement part (not an OEM component). We build to OEM specifications using comparable-grade materials. Production is done in an ISO9002-certified facility, and each batch is inspected for consistent performance.

How fast do you ship and how much does it cost?
We offer fast global shipping—typically 5–15 days worldwide—and standard shipping is free. Expedited options are available at checkout depending on your location.

What is your warranty and return policy?
This product includes a 1-year warranty against manufacturing defects under normal use. If something goes wrong, contact our support team with your order details. Returns are accepted within our standard return window (unused & in original condition); please see our policy page or reach out for instructions.

  • Verify that the product images and specifications match your original part. If discrepancies exist—even if your model is listed—do not proceed with the purchase.

Must have for Apple Remote!!
Color: Blue, Color: Blue
I regret not buying this sooner! As most of you know, the Apple TV remote is a slippery little thing, and this case is perfect! Color is bright so you can find your remote, it has a nerve grip so it’s no longer slippery, and the silicon protects it from drops. It doesn’t hinder the buttons and goes on and off super easily. Great investment for the remote.

How did I watch TV without one?
Color: blue-glow
We stayed at an AirBnB recently and the TV was set up to use the tiny, thin AppleTV remote. We have the same remote and I constantly lose it or drop it or brush the touchpad when I don’t mean to. When I saw that they had wrapped their remote in this thin silicone “case”, I went on Amazon and bought one immediately. It arrived right after we got home and took all of 10 seconds to put on the remote. It fits snuggly, but not so much that you have to worry about damaging the remote putting the case on or taking it off. It doesn’t cover any of the buttons or the plug and gives the remote a bit more heft. The ribbing and “stickiness” of the silicone makes it easier to pick up with my big fingers. Now the remote is easier to use (partly because it’s easier to pick up and to hold). It’s also harder to lose, because it makes the remote feel a bit larger, and (ours at least) is in a cool, translucent, day-glo green, that glows in the dark (sort of). Win-win-win...

What I should have bought long ago
Color: Black
Finally! The remote isn’t constantly slipping out of people’s hands or falling inside the couch. I should have thought to buy this years ago. Comfortable- yes. Grippy - yes. Doesn’t get lost anymore. It’s durable/well made. It was the color I expected and looked better than I expected. Great product and price!

Would be 5 stars if it glowed brighter
Color: blue-glow, Color: blue-glow
SHORT VERSION Yes buy this! Just don’t expect it to glow very bright. COLOR I thought about getting the Black, Navy, or Mint Green, but instead I got the ZBlue bc of the glow-in-the-dark feature. I like it, but it doesn’t glow that bright when exposed to a light bulb. You can see the pic I posted that’s almost black, that’s after holding it next to a bright light for a few minutes. But when I exposed it to the sunshine through a window for a few minutes, it glowed MUCH brighter (see the other glow pic). But, how are you going to expose it to the sun when its dark outside? When my wife first saw the color, she said “that’s stupid” haha. But I think it’s growing on her. For these photos, I put it on a white background, with DeWalt Yellow and Kobalt Blue next to it so you can see it’s true color. I wouldn’t buy this for its glowing feature, just buy the color you like. Even at night, there’s usually too much ambient light in the room, from the TV or lamps, for this faint glow to be seen. FIT & FEEL It feels like super soft silicone rubber, I like it. Feels very high quality. The remote slid in really easy, and I thought it might be too big, and the remote would fall out, but it hasn’t. The texture feels great, and the thicker pads on top and bottom help you hold onto the remote. It doesn’t slide between the couch cushions anymore, and that’s really why I bought it! An added bonus is that now I can immediately see which side is the top of the remote! Before, I sometimes hit the wrong button bc I wouldn’t realize I was holding the remote upside down. Overall, I’m definitely glad I bought this.
