The Bras and The Bees by FA NotleyThis is a biography of particular interest to those in the bee keeping world. It tells the story of Brian Sherriff, a man born in the late 1920s, who inherited his fathers corset factory and went on to run a bra factory in Cornwall, but lost everything in the recession of the 1970s. Using boning, net and fabric intended for bras, Brian and his wife Pat created an entirely new kind of beekeeping hood and veil literally from the bones of the old

This is a biography of particular interest to those in the bee-keeping world. It tells the story of Brian Sherriff, a man born in the late 1920s, who inherited his father’s corset factory and went on to run a bra factory in Cornwall, but lost everything in the recession of the 1970s. Using boning, net and fabric intended for bras, Brian and his wife Pat created an entirely new kind of beekeeping hood and veil – literally from the bones of the old enterprise – and founded an internationally successful beekeeping clothing company: BJ Sherriff. All BJ Sherriff garments are still produced in Cornwall.

The story takes in some unusual history: the early days of Langridge Ltd corset factory in Bristol, dating back to 1816, and details of the family’s experiences during two world wars. Brian’s father was in a reserved occupation and made panty-girdles for the WRNS and the WAAFs during World War II. Brian lived through the first nights of the Bristol Blitz as a boy and heard the lions in Bristol Zoo roaring. Brian entered the family profession of corsetry and became a much-loved director of a bra factory. Then one day he started to keep bees. His life was about to change beyond recognition.

What makes this a fascinating story is the extraordinary personality of Brian Sherriff. In his twenties he taught himself square dancing from a book and established the group Bryan Sheriff and his Square Dancing Posse, for which he acted as caller. As bra factory director, he had a calling card for dull business meetings. In his top pocket he kept what looked like a handkerchief. When taken out with a flourish, however, it revealed itself to be a miniature bra. He called it The Bra-kerchief.

This account of Brian’s life takes us through the bad times and the good and shows how one man’s tenacity, good humour and sense of adventure can make a real difference in the world.

“Brian and Pat Sherriff truly changed my world and the world of beekeepers everywhere. This is Brian’s story.”
– Kim Flottum, Editor of Bee Culture Magazine

“Even if you’re not a beekeeper, I’m sure you’ll find the story of Brian’s life engaging, harking as it does back to simpler, slower times.”
– Bill Turnbull, Journalist and Presenter

“Who can resist the story of the man who invented the bra-kerchief? Beekeeping has always attracted interesting characters from all walks of life and Brian Sherriff is certainly one of that club.”
– Martha Kearney, Journalist and Broadcaster

Simple, Powerful, and So Much Easier Than Traditional Vacuum Sealers
Color: White
I’ve used traditional vacuum sealers before, and this handheld one is honestly so much easier to work with. The design is simple and compact, and it takes up almost no space in the kitchen compared to the larger machines. One thing I really appreciate is how easy it is to operate. The one-button design makes sealing quick, and the suction is surprisingly strong for such a small device. It removes the air from the bags quickly and seals everything tightly. The bags themselves are also really well made. The material feels thick and durable, so I don’t have to worry about them puncturing easily, even when storing things with sharper edges. Being reusable is a big plus too. Overall this has been a really convenient way to keep food fresh longer without dealing with a bulky machine. If you want something simple, effective, and easy to use for everyday food storage, this is a great option.

My New Favorite Kitchen Gadget: Compact & Effective!
Color: White, Color: White
I recently added this handheld vacuum sealer to my kitchen, and it has quickly become an indispensable tool. From the moment I unboxed it, I was impressed by its sleek, compact design. It truly is the size of a pepper mill, making it incredibly easy to store without cluttering my countertops. Using it is surprisingly simple - I just press a button, and it efficiently seals the bag in mere seconds. The powerful suction is evident, ensuring a tight seal every time. I've noticed a significant improvement in how long my food stays fresh, which has dramatically reduced my grocery waste. The reusable bags are a fantastic bonus - they are durable, easy to clean, and perfect for various items. I appreciate that they are safe for the dishwasher, refrigerator, and microwave, adding to their convenience. Whether I'm sealing leftover dinner, fresh produce, or even dry goods, this little machine handles it all with ease. It's incredibly versatile for all types of food, from meats to fruits. The removable water tank is a thoughtful design, making cleaning a breeze and preventing any issues. I even take it with me for camping trips, as its cordless and portable nature makes it ideal for outdoor adventures. This vacuum sealer is a smart investment for anyone looking to extend food freshness and save money. It has genuinely transformed my food storage habits for the better. I highly recommend this product to anyone seeking efficiency and freshness in their kitchen.

Exceptional for freshness

This is great! I really like how this works and ease of use. I wish there was a snack size bag for smaller items. But these sizes work perfectly for most things.

As good as my large Foodsaver if not better.
Color: White, Color: White
I have a large expensive Food Saver sealer that I have been using for years, it's stored away and not convenient for one quick sealing of something. So I did a lot of comparing of these smaller sealers and I chose this because they provided the suction power which I couldn't find one that matches this and that translates into quality of vacuum power. Some didn't even give that number so those I avoided. This also included 30 bags of good size and quality. Not the most expensive not the cheapest but certainly worth it. I've included some photos of what I have sealed against my Food Saver. Now the bags are not the same but for comparison of which looks like it removed all the air. I like you press the button and don't need to hold it, this will automatically stop when it's programmed to and not once has it left any air in the bag. I even put my raw meat into a ziploc bag leave that open and put that inside the sealer bag. These are reusable but limiting exposure to raw meat so cleaning is a little easier if even needed. This is so much easier to grab a bag seal it and be done compared to getting out my sealer, having to cut a bag to size and seal one end first. If I have a lot to seal then I don't mind taking it out but for some left over chicken and I need to seal one package this is hands down so much easier. Charting it is simple, plug it in the light is red while charging green when charged. A child could do it. Look at the comparison of this handheld unit over my vacuum sealer and you can decide for yourself. Wish I got this years ago. I almost forgot this is also great again for Susvide something I do quite often so overall this makes life easier in the kitchen and saves money because food lasts longer, my coffee beans that don't fit in my counter Gator sealing can I can seal keep in the fridge keeping the beans as fresh as possible and when I need them so easy to open and again reseal if I choose. Things I wouldn't bother sealing before I do now, like my extra coffee beans, cheese, herbs etc. I am really impressed at the power this little thing has and it doesn't feel cheap, certainly you pick it up and you don't think oh this can't be good. Do yourself a favor and pick this one because for no other reason this appears to have the greatest suction power against all others that even bother to list it. If it's not listed then they are not themselves impressed enough so instead of showing it's not comparable they leave it out hoping you just don't notice.
